A fleet of 32 electric vehicles operating in two shifts, a power connection that provides just 60 kW, and an actual power requirement of 230 kW to charge all vehicles simultaneously without interrupting operations: these are the starting conditions for Smile S.r.l., a last-mile logistics client in Friuli-Venezia Giulia. Dogma Energia has designed an ecosystem combining energy storage, solar power, and energy management capable of bridging the gap between available power and power demand, ensuring that the fleet experiences zero downtime even during peak charging periods.

The Challenge

The challenge wasn’t the electric vehicle itself, but everything surrounding it.

Technical Challenge

A fleet of 32 electric vehicles operating on back-to-back double shifts, with tight charging windows between shifts.

Network Constraint

Power available at the point of delivery (POD) is limited to just 60 kW.

Charging Needs

The need to ensure a constant 230 kW to charge vehicles simultaneously—nearly four times the power supplied by the grid.

The Solution

Dogma has built an energy ecosystem managed by the CSMS, featuring peak shaving capabilities and real-time monitoring of the fleet’s charging status.

Architecture

The ecosystem is governed by the CSMS DOGMA, which primarily performs peak shaving and monitors the fleet’s charging status.

BESS System

We installed a storage system with an output of 250 kW and a massive capacity of 1,290 kWh. The vehicle is equipped with the very latest generation of 314Ah LFP cells, which provide significantly greater thermal stability than previous models and can withstand heavy charging cycles while minimizing degradation over time.

Zero Downtime Dynamics

In response to a constant demand of 230 kW, the CSMS performs peak shaving: it draws a maximum of 60 kW from the grid and compensates for the remaining 170 kW by supplying continuous additional power from the BESS. In the event that severe weather drains the batteries or due to faults attributable to the BESS, the CSMS automatically starts a 250 kVA diesel generator in less than 200 milliseconds, preventing any fleet downtime.
